Generic Name: tizanidine (tye ZAN i deen)
Brand Names: Zanaflex
What is Zanaflex?
Zanaflex is a short-acting muscle relaxer. It works by blocking nerve impulses (pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Zanaflex is used to treat spasticity by temporarily relaxing muscle tone. Zanaflex may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I should know about Zanaflex?
Zanaflex is a short-acting medication that should be taken only for daily activities that require relief from muscle spasticity.
Do not take Zanaflex if you are also taking the antidepressant fluvoxamine (Luvox), or the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (Cipro). Do not use Zanaflex at a time when muscle tone is needed to assure safe balance and movement for certain activities. In some situations, it may endanger your physical safety to be in a state of reduced muscle tone.
Switching between Zanaflex tablets and capsules, or changing the way you take it with regard to eating, can cause an increase in side effects or a decrease in therapeutic effect. Follow your doctor\\\\\\\'s instructions carefully. After making any changes in how you take Zanaflex, contact your doctor if you notice any change in how well the medicine works or if it causes increased side effects.
Do not take more than three doses (36 mg) of Zanaflex in a 24-hour period. Too much of this medication can damage your liver. Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, other muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Zanaflex. Tell your doctor if you need to use any of these other medicines together with Zanaflex. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects of Zanaflex.
How do I use Zanaflex?
Before taking Zanaflex, inform your pharmacist or doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Follow the directions for using Zanaflex provided by your doctor. Store Zanaflex at room temperature, away from heat and light.
If you miss a dose of Zanaflex, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next Zanaflex dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do NOT take 2 Zanaflex doses at once.
Do NOT share Zanaflex with others for whom it was not prescribed. Do not use Zanaflex for other health conditions. Keep Zanaflex out of the reach of children. If using Zanaflex for an extended period of time, obtain Zanaflex refills before your supply runs out.
Zanaflex Cautions
Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, inform your doctor or dentist that you are using Zanaflex. You may experience drowsiness with Zanaflex. Using Zanaflex alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines cause drowsiness. Before taking any new medication, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
For Women: If you anticipate becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Zanaflex during pregnancy.
Possible Zanaflex Side Effects
Zanaflex side effects that may go away during treatment, include drowsiness, dry mouth, flushing, or dizziness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience increased muscle weakness; trouble urinating or lack of bladder control; or change in emotions, mood, or behavior. If you notice other Zanaflex effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
Zanaflex Drug Interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Use a drug interaction checker to find out if your medicines interact with each other.
Zanaflex Overdose
If a Zanaflex overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
